Planning and edits

Well planning is underway for a couple of shoots in the coming weeks and I'm getting quite excited as the ideas for them come together into a more detailed plan of action.  I'll be revisiting the angel wings props and doing some other creative stuff too.

In the meantime here are a couple of edits from my last angel wings shoot with the beautiful Jo Paul.

Start of a New Year and the Plan.

Last year wasn't a great year for my photography what with breaking my arm, having an extension done at home and projects at work.  All in all I think I only managed about half a dozen shoots and little time for personal projects.

For the year ahead I plan to get in a lot more shoots (if you fancy working with me just let me know) but I also want to spend some time doing some other projects like macro and some high speed photography using flashes to freeze motion.  There should be some exciting news on the flash front later in the year with the prospect of the Vela One being available that can freeze motion at 1/2,000,000 of a second as opposed to a normal flash at 1/128 power that can achieve around 1/20,000.

In the meantime I have been revisiting a few older shoots and picked out some new images to edit.

Been out of the game (A bit of a break)

Well it's been a long time since I picked up the camera.  I have had to take it easy after I broken my arm in a school sports day accident.

So I've had a bit of a break in every sense of the word.  During which time my studio time has built up and I've been thinking about what I would like to do on future projects.  Hopefully in the next few weeks I'll be up and shooting again in the studio.  Watch out for some new stuff coming soon :)

If you fancy working with me over the coming months let me know.

Roseanne (before and after)

I'm never sure sharing the before and after on shots shows that I'm a better editor than photographer but here goes.

 Before

Before

 After

After

So here is what has been done

1. Adjusted the highlights and shadows in Lightroom
2. Turned up contrast then adjust Orange and Yellow channels to keep the skin tone natural
3. Adjust crop and rotation
3. Then it's over to photoshop
4. First I have created a mask round Roseanne
5. Duplicated the layer twice
6. On the first copy I have selected the long piece of walk to the left of her head and transformed this and stretched to cover that red curtain.  This is the background layer.
7. Applied a gaussain blur to that layer and applied the Roseanne mask to the top layer so only she shows on the blurred background.
8. Add a blank layer on top to do the heal brush stuff - she really doesn't need much
9. Merge the layers back into one before using the liquify tool to smooth creases in her outfit out.  I would normal do this before merging the layer but with a blurred background there isn't anything to distort so easier to do as a final step.

So that's it - any questions let me know.

Palette Knife effect

I edited an old photo taken as part of a MUA shoot from last year and decided to give it a sort of photo into palette paint effect.  Was reasonably pleased how it came out.

The effect is achieved by duplicating the layer and using the liquify tool to expand the image to cover a larger area.  Then using a palette style brush on the layer masks to reveal and hide different part of the image.  Below is the before and after.
